Design a fleet safety management system that allows fleet managers to monitor driver activity effectively.
Enable functionality across the dashboard that facilitates incident reporting, data transparency, and accident examination.
Help fleet managers simplify accident inspection and reduce documentation at the time of claiming insurance.
We interviewed drivers and safety managers to understand their challenges and pain points and gauge the existing issues in the internal process. Here is what we found:
- There was no system for real-time monitoring of ongoing events.
- The process of inspection of incidents had multiple redundancies. The entire cycle from reporting of the incident to documentation and verification to claiming accidental insurance and collecting the settlement was cumbersome and time-consuming.
- There was no reliable proof of incidents which also led to a skewed evaluation of drivers and fleets.
- There was no process for driver coaching.
After our research and discussions with stakeholders, we concluded that creating a dashboard, that is informational yet approachable, would make for an appropriate fleet safety management system.
To enable optimum real-time monitoring of the fleet, we provided a snapshot of all fleet activity through a real-time notifications tab on the homepage of the tab. The notification panel presents a map with visual coordinates of all drivers spread out across the geography. These elements are complemented by two graphs depicting events vs time and risk assessment pie charts that track real-time drivers activity. The information hierarchy for the page starts with general information before diving into individual driver-related statistics and alerts to maintain quality checks on the quality of driving and fleet.
The information provided on the dashboard needed an appropriate color palette to ensure that it doesnâ€™t overwhelm the user. We chose a pastel spring palette to encourage the users to take their time to explore. To create a distinct visual hierarchy, we incorporated bolder and more solid colors for events that required immediate attention.
To improve data visualization, we included basic pie charts for all events with each event further divided into sub-events. We added a navigation bar with minimal line icons to provide a scannable interface that is seamless for end-users. We created an intuitive player controller that allows users to scrub through videos to view incidents that have occurred throughout a journey to draw inferences and facilitate a holistic evaluation of drivers. These UI features aided the overall usability of the platform.
